4 QUESTIONS FOR ‘FAB 4’ DIRECTOR NAOYA YAMAGUCHI
Today, we’re profiling “Fab 4” director Naoya Yamaguchi of HAT Inc., who was awarded a Commendation for “The Dolls with Attitude” at last night’s Award Presentation. Congratulations Naoya!

What was the inspiration behind your script?

The theme for my script is ‘diversity.’ People can enjoy freedom as much as they want to but at the same time most of us are self conscious about harmony – we don’t want to stick out, we want to blend in. Sometimes as a result, people tend to think in the same way. And somehow it is rather difficult to do something different to others. For example, we tend to wear the same t-shirts or dress the same way. You realize that it’s actually an interesting phenomenon. So that was the starting point for my script.

Who is your inspiration in the industry?

There are many who I aspire to be like such as David Fincher and Terry Gilliam. First of all, there is something in common between the two directors which is wonderful: impressive art direction and they are both able to create new worlds.

What are the new techniques in film making that you are bringing into creative advertising?

Intentionally, I chose an analog approach rather than incorporating advanced film technology.

Do you like to direct short or long films?

Right now, I am more interested in creating long films. The reason is because I would like to edit the actor or actresses that are performing. If it is a short film, there is not much opportunity to capture their movements.
