In a few months’ time, Mark Tutssel will
take the reins as ADFEST 2019’s Grand Jury President, presiding over no less
than eight separate juries.
Based in Chicago, Tutssel leads Leo Burnett
globally as its Executive Chairman & Global Chief Creative Officer. We asked
him to reflect on his favourite Leo Burnett campaigns from this part of the
world, and he singled out the following 5 campaigns below.
Petronas commercials, directed by the great Yasmin Ahmad, Kuala Lumpur
Director Yasmin Ahmad’s beautiful and emotional television commercials for Petronas, the national oil and gas company, are famous in Malaysia for their humour, heart and love.

NikeiD Generator, Beacon Leo Burnett, Tokyo
When Nike opened its
first premium store in Harajuku, Beacon Leo Burnett created the NikeiD
generator – an ingenious, future-facing idea that snaps a photo of customers
in-store. The colours within this photograph then generated an original pair of
shoes, which people could order directly from the NikeiD site.

McDonald’s “Wrapped”, Leo Burnett Kreasindo, Jakarta
Did you know that
during Ramadhan, many restaurants in Indonesia shut down or cover their windows
so as not to tempt Muslims to break their fast? Leo Burnett Kreasindo altered
its advertising – and even wrapped its famous golden arches in fabric – so as
not to tempt passers-by who are fasting.
This campaign won a 360 Lotus (now called Integrated Lotus) at ADFEST 2011. Read the case study here.
Coca-Cola “Small World Machines”, Leo Burnett, Sydney
Many people will
remember "Small World Machines", originally born out of Leo Burnett
Sydney in 2013, which turned a Coca-Cola vending machine into a portal for
Indians and Pakistanis to interact with each other and engage across borders.

SPC Ardmona’s #MyFamilyCan from Melbourne
In 2015, Leo Burnett’s
Melbourne office addressed a scandal about imported food that was causing
outbreaks of hepatitis. The campaign featured Australian farming families who
supply fresh fruits to SPC Ardmona. By featuring real farmers on SPC Ardmona’s
packaging, it sparked a nationwide conversation about food labeling.

HP Lubricants’ “Roads that Honk”, Leo Burnett Mumbai
On a dangerously windy
road, Leo Burnett installed radar equipment to warn drivers of oncoming traffic
around the bend. It’s a simple idea with the potential to save lives.

These campaigns, among
others, helped Leo Burnett take home ADFEST’s Network of the Year trophy in
2013 and 2015, and runner-up in 2011, 2012, 2014 and 2016.
Tutssel will arrive in Thailand a few days before ADFEST 2019 to judge the Lotus Awards. Tickets to ADFEST 2019 – which runs from 20th March to 23rd March at PEACH Royal Cliff Resort, Pattaya, Thailand – are now on sale.
